Electromobility strategies of the automobile manufacturers

[AMZ/CATI, February 2019]

The Chemnitz Automotive Institute (CATI) and the Network of the Automotive Supply Industry (AMZ) have examined the strategies and product planning of the automobile manufacturers Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Daimler, BMW, Opel and Ford that manufacture in Germany. In this study, they show the models and quantities planned up to 2025, the planned development of the plant locations that build e-vehicles or e-components, as well as other technological trends.

Abstract

Worldwide, electric vehicles still have marginal shares in new registrations or in the vehicle fleet. Nevertheless, a trend reversal towards electromobility has been discernible since 2017. It manifests itself in a product offensive by all automobile manufacturers, which will lead to significant growth in electric vehicles in a first wave from 2020 and increasingly from 2025.

The main drivers are regulatory requirements in Europe and China, which, through CO 2 limits or prescribed quotas, force manufacturers to drastically increase the proportion of vehicle models with low-emission drives in a relatively short period of time.

This detailed analysis enables automotive suppliers to better classify the effects on the value chain that can be expected from the manufacturers’ e-offensive and to adapt to changes in vehicle and electronics architecture, vehicle production, procurement strategies and material provision.
