Ukraine
The consequences of the Ukraine war also affect the Saxon car industry. Supply chains are disrupted, transport is restricted and production at suppliers in Ukraine is down. Along with Tunisia, the Ukraine is the main supplier for European manufacturers, especially for wire harnesses.
Wiring harnesses are complex components, some of which are custom-made for each vehicle model. Therefore, production cannot be changed at short notice or replaced in any other way. Stocks are scarce.
The larger companies with locations in Ukraine include Fujikura from Japan and the French company Nexans. As probably the most important supplier for German car manufacturers, the Nuremberg wiring system manufacturer Leoni shut down its two factories with several thousand employees in the south-west of the Ukraine after the beginning of the war.
